Iowa Health Lab … Dr. Mary Gilchrist interview

Does it make sense that the public health lab for all Iowans should be controlled by the University of Iowa with oversight only by the Board of Regents? Why does no other state use this system?” -from Dr. Mary Gilchrist’s now defunct website (

Internationally recognized public health expert Dr. Mary Gilchrist returned to Iowa last week. I missed her presentation, but back in April, 2007, I interviewed her and put together a program on Public Access TV about her case against the University of Iowa.

Gilchrist was ousted as the director of the University Hygienic Lab at the University of Iowa. She was asking for lab space for state public health that would provide for a pandemic of avian influenza (among other health threats).

In her lawsuit against UI President Gary Fethke and UI VP of Research Meredith Hay she said that Hay cut 12,000 feet of new lab space and that Fethke told her, “You stuck your neck out for what you believed in and we just can’t live with it.”

This program first aired April 30, 2007 on PATV’s “Live & Local.”
